Active character
Depending on the used language some characters are active, e.g. " for german or = for turkish. This can be disabled with the babel macros, to set the length for example in the TeX way, when \usepackage[turkish]{babel} is loaded before the following command:
\shorthandoff{=}
\parskip=-3ex
\shorthandon{=}

Spellchecker
Using ispell
Changing the Language
For example: switching from any other language to greek with hyphenation also for greek:
\begin{otherlanguage*}{greek}
 ...
\end{otherlanguage*}
don't forget to load babel with all used languages.

German Umlauts
The umlauts and the other special european characters are part of the latin1-code table.
\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}

Altdeutsch
in latex preamble
\usepackage{oldgerm}
\swabfamily  *a *o *u
For a dokumentation look at http://www.uni-magdeburg.de/bauke/latex/tipsutricks/oldgerman/index.html

Czech Typography
According to the Czech typographical rules, one-letter preposition cannot be the last word on a line. Therefore, some Czechs prepared program vlnka (see http://math.feld.cvut.cz/olsak/Welcome.html for further reference), which replaces space after one-letter preposition by tilde (~).

Hebrew-Support
